The future of GSM technology in the metering market
In the late 1990s the Half Hourly market had been de-regulated, the switch over to solid state metering was in full swing, and the need to remotely read meters on a daily basis gave rise to the need for cost effective alternatives to Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). There were a significant number of sites where the cost of installing a hardwired solution could run into the thousands of pounds and some where it was not an option at any cost. Of the various options that were available, Global Systems Mobile (GSM) became the most popular and eventually ended up as the first choice, ahead of PSTN, as the technology evolved and the cost-model improved.
Subsequently GSM has been used to deliver the same data retrieval benefits to the larger consumers in the Non-Half Hourly market and as part of trials in the SME and Domestic markets, where billing can be improved through the elimination of estimated readings and there is value in the half-hourly consumption data for energy management activities locally or at the back office. Therefore the question is raised, does GSM technology have a future in the metering market?
